Be Australian... Bung a Barra on the Barbie for Australia Day - 25/01/2005

The Irish have Irish Stew, Americans have Thanks Giving turkeys, Italians have pasta, the French have le grande cuisine but only Australia, being the Lucky Country has the Barramundi.

Australian Barramundi Farmers’ Association President Craig Foster says that the dinki di Australian thing to do on Australia Day is to head for the back yard and bung a barra on the barbie.

“Barramundi is the iconic Australian fish” Mr Foster said.

“It is native to tropical Australia, has a fabulous taste, and all it needs is a cold beer or a great Aussie chardonnay to make the national day a national occasion” he said.

Mr Foster said that Barramundi being a great Australian can show the best of our wide cultural diversity. Barramundi can be grilled straight on a flat plate with olive oil, or wrapped in foil and cooked with lemon and butter, done Italian style with a little tomato and basil sauce or alternatively with coriander, ginger, lime, chilli and coconut milk.
